Online medical certificate consultation

A consultation is always required. Starting a request online does not issue a certificate. Your doctor will only provide one where it's clinically appropriate after a real‑time phone or video consult.

When an Online Medical Certificate Suits

  • Time off work due to illness or injury
  • School or university absence
  • Carer's leave to look after a family or household member
  • Recovering from a minor illness at home when you need documentation
  • Short-term absence when an in-clinic visit isn't practical

Types of Medical Certificate

Medical Certificate for Work

Unwell and need a day off? Speak with an AHPRA‑registered doctor who can, where clinically appropriate, issue a certificate for your employer.

Medical Certificate for School or University

Under the weather and need to explain an absence from school or uni? A doctor can assess you and issue a certificate where suitable.

Carer's Leave Certificate

Caring for an unwell family or household member? Your doctor can issue a carer's leave certificate where clinically appropriate.

How It Works

Step 1

Start Your Request

Use the button below to tell us what you need — certificate type, dates and your contact details. This is intake only, not a certificate.

Step 2

Speak With a Doctor

Have a real‑time phone or video consultation with an AHPRA‑registered doctor who assesses your situation.

Step 3

Receive Your Certificate

Where clinically appropriate, your doctor issues a valid certificate, emailed to you securely — often the same day.

Why Choose an Online Certificate Consult

Valid after a real consult

A certificate from an AHPRA‑registered doctor after a genuine real‑time consultation is a valid medical document in Australia.

Work, study or carer's leave

Request support for sick leave, school or uni absence, or carer's leave — subject to the doctor's clinical judgement.

Usually same day

Most consultations are quick, and where a certificate is issued it's typically emailed soon after your appointment.

Australia‑wide telehealth

Speak with a doctor by phone or video from wherever you are — no waiting room required when telehealth is suitable.

Important — Please Read

A medical certificate is a legal document. By law and under AHPRA's telehealth standards, a doctor must actually consult with you in real time (by phone or video) before issuing one — it can't be done by a form or questionnaire alone. Your doctor will only issue a certificate where it's clinically appropriate, and uses their professional judgement on dates and wording. We can't guarantee a certificate, and certificates can't be backdated to before your consultation.

How to Prepare

  • A quiet place with a stable phone or internet connection
  • Your Medicare card details if you're eligible for rebates
  • Your employer, school or uni name if you want it noted on the certificate
  • A brief note on how you've been feeling and the dates you need covered

Online Medical Certificate FAQs

Are online medical certificates legal in Australia?+

Yes. A certificate issued by an AHPRA‑registered doctor after a genuine real‑time consultation is valid. Employers and educators generally accept them like any other medical certificate.

Will I definitely get a certificate?+

No — it's at the doctor's discretion and only issued where clinically appropriate after assessing you.

Does filling in the online form issue my certificate?+

No. The form only starts your request. A real‑time phone or video consultation is always required before a certificate can be issued.

How long does it take?+

Most consultations are quick, and your certificate is emailed soon after — often the same day — where one is issued.

Can the certificate be backdated?+

A certificate reflects the doctor's assessment at the time of your consultation and can't be backdated to before it.

Will my employer or school accept it?+

A certificate from an AHPRA‑registered doctor meets the requirements of the Fair Work Act 2009. Some workplaces or institutions have their own policies, so it's worth checking yours.

Is carer's leave different from sick leave?+

Yes. Sick leave covers your own illness or injury; carer's leave covers time off to care for an unwell member of your immediate family or household. A doctor can issue a certificate for either where appropriate.

How much does it cost?+

From $39.99. Bulk billing may be available for eligible patients — see Fees & Billing.
